Fine Arts Friday: Back in the saddle

We’re just finishing our first week of the new school year. It’s also our first field trip of the year and our anniversary. It’s been an exhausting week, but far less exhausting than last year. On more days than not, we’ve managed to have our morning time, which is where we do our fine arts studies. Morning time is something I took from Sarah Mackenzie, who in turn got it from Cindy Rollins. It’s fast becoming indispensable the peace and tranquility of our homeschool.

In addition to our family read aloud (we’re currently reading The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge. It’s like Ann of Green Gables with magic), we spend some time with our artist, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, and listen to one of our music selections. I’ll cover Corot in a later post.

The folk song is “The Bold Grenadier.” The lyrics may cause you to raise an eyebrow, but it will probably go right over the kids’ heads. It’s a lovely song, despite the questionable theme.

The hymn “I Bind Unto Myself Today” is based on St. Patrick’s Breastplate. It was voted favorite Anglican hymn in 2003, and it’s easy to see why.  You can find a pdf of the music with lyrics here.
