My not-quite swagger wagon

We have been looking to replace our faithful, abused 1996 Ford Windstar.  After 15 years and 200,000 miles, she’s given all she can reasonably be expected to give.  Today, we purchased a 2007 Ford Freestar.  (Insert dance of joy here.) What I really wanted was this. But apparently it’s illegal in Texas to bungee your children to the roof. It was also a wee bit out of our price range. (Fun April fact: this was my first car. I called him Mr. Ed and made my kid sister ride in the hatch. Shhh, don’t tell my mom.)

Anyway, when we moved to Texas, we replaced the 1985 Volvo with a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. We financed about half of that.  We bought this car with actual cash.  It feels really, really good.  We are still working to pay off what Dave Ramsey calls “stupid debt,” but have been saving our pennies because we knew the poor Windstar wouldn’t last much longer.  We had to put $1500 from the car fund into it in December and that really stung.  It also pushed back the purchase by a few weeks. But we have been really blessed by overtime opportunities this winter. Of course, I’m starting to forget what MTG looks like, but there are trade-offs in everything.

Congratulations on your new acquisition! That is a sweet looking Freestyle. How many miles on it? I had to give up the ghost on my beloved 2000 Windstar (w/221K miles) in October and ended up buying the exact black 2011 SE Swagger Wagon from the commercial. As sweet as it is (and it is as close as a guy can get to a sports car while driving a minivan) I miss my Windstar. And I love Ford vehicles. So I'm a bit sad. We have more littles than you so our main family ride is a 2003 Econoline. Back then, you couldn't add much swagger to them. Hopefully in a few years we will get one with more bells & whistles. Enjoy the Freestar. If I'd seen a good 2007 available I would have given it very strong consideration. So sad Ford exited that market.

That picture isn't our actual van, but one identical. It has 55000 miles.
Yeah, I think it was stupid for Ford to leave the mini-van market. Freestars are very popular, even several years later. As much as I like the Flex, it just isn't the same thing. So in the future, we'll probably be looking at Honda or Toyota. Thanks Ford!
