I'd Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life

Today, sitting beside my father’s hospital bed, I finished I’d Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life  by Anne Bogel.

This was a Christmas gift — one of three books for book lovers, I received (Book Girl and On Reading Well were the other two in this trinity.)

I’ve been reading it bit by bit at night as a restorative in a hard season. My dad is in his final days, and it is hard and heartbreaking and wearying. This morning as I took my place in the pleather recliner, I decided to forgo the to-do list and finish it. Strangely, it was the perfect book for this time, a sweet reminder of the solace of books.

I’d Rather Be Reading is a treasure for readers. A storehouse of “You too?” and “Yes. That. Exactly.” As Anne herself is fond of pointing out, not all books are for all people, and that certainly applies to this book. It is a book for Readers (not just readers) and book lovers. For people who “think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves.” (From the chapter on how to organize your bookshelves.) Of course, for most people, a book about reading books seems superfluous. This is not their book.

I’m a noted cheapskate, but I do recommend Readers buy, not borrow, the hardback, not the kindle. It’s a beautiful book that fits perfectly in the hand. It’s also a perfect gift book that will actually be read (by the right person.)

What’s your first book of 2019? Do share. You know Readers — we’re always looking for new entries to our “To Be Read” lists.
