Fine Arts Friday: A tentative plan

Emphasis on tentative. For fine arts, we generally follow the Ambleside schedule for art, music (composer, folk song, and hymns) and poetry.  Ambleside works on a 3-term schedule, starting in September. We generally follow that, but we do some fine arts “pick up” work in the summer.

I want to have a set schedule for nature study to get us out into nature because it’s the easiest for me to slough off. Well, that and Shakespeare. We have a membership for the Dallas Arboretum, and I want to go there once a month. Actually, the Arboretum is where we’ve picked trees to follow through the year, a project I’ll be blogging more about in the future.

These are the trees I’m observing through the year. This was taken in March.

My one goal for Nature Studies (other than the Arboretum visits) is to have the kids familiar with the nature in their backyard. Our city has recently restored a creek habitat in walking distance from our house, and I want to visit there at least twice a month. I also want to make monthly trips to the nature preserve that’s a five-minute drive from us.

In addition to these once weekly trips, I want to make a concerted effort to explore and cultivate our own backyard. (And front yard, which gets more sun.) I’m not exactly sure how that will all work out yet, but I know it will involve more than just me yelling, “Go outside and get some fresh air.” I really need to yell that to myself more, too.

We won’t follow the Ambleside Shakespeare schedule exactly. The plays for this year are Twelfth Night, Macbeth and As You Like It. We’ll probably do The Winter’s Tale next month because we can see the play performed in October. We also saw Macbeth last year at Shakespeare in the Park, but we didn’t really study it. So I haven’t really decided whether we’ll do that one or not. I want to see what’s available to watch and go with that. Plays, after all, are meant to be viewed. And call me a purist, but movie versions just aren’t the same. I do enjoy Shakespeare: the Animated Tales. Not really sure what that says about me.

I’m not sure I’m going to have one dedicated “Fine Arts Day” as we had in the past when we were attending co-op. I think I’d rather have it incorporated throughout the week. I think we’ll be less likely to blow it off to catch up or do other, necessary things.

What about you? What are your plans for incorporating fine arts in your children’s education?
