To be understood

Most-people-do-not-listen

My oldest son has auditory processing issues, and sometimes getting him to understand what we’re telling him is difficult bordering on impossible. He hears us; he just doesn’t always understand.

But with Bulldozer, we know that he has difficulty understanding and so we can take steps to help him bridge that gap. I think one of the biggest handicaps I deal with is not knowing when I don’t understand.

I think one of the greatest desires —  maybe even greatest needs — people have is to be understood. How many books, movies, songs, angsty teen laments are about the problems of being misunderstood? (I’m not knocking angsty teen laments; I lamented myself as a teen and beyond. But your teen years are the high mark of your angsty lamenting. Or they should be. Then you have to suck it up and move on.)

But for all the time and energy we spend on being understood, how much energy do we spend on understanding? How much do I spend on understanding?  Not nearly enough. Understanding requires me getting out of my own head and focusing on the other person. Understanding requires me to not assume, not be ready to be offended, not infer things not said. Understanding requires much more work. But if we all worked on understanding others then we would all be more understood. Capiche?
