Pondering over a picture

Ukrainian priests

This image came from the ongoing political protests in Ukraine. I’ll admit I don’t really know what’s going on there. The government has banned protests in Kyiv, creepy text messages have been sent to protesters, and people have died. But I don’t know the whys and wherefores of the disagreement. (If anyone has a good sum-up, drop a link in the comments.)

But I this picture is so striking — priests standing between armed police and not always peaceful protesters. Doing a little digging, I learn that these Orthodox priests are placing themselves in harms way to stop the violence.

Church, isn’t this what we’re supposed to do? Go to the battlefields where broken and angry people are hurting one another and stop the violence? Go into broken communities, broken homes, broken relationships, and broken lives and stand for peace — the only true peace that lasts, the peace that Christ brings?

How and where can you stand for peace today?
