Fine Arts Friday: Their new adventure

“Again, we know that the human hand is a wonderful and exquisite instrument to be used in a hundred movements exacting delicacy, direction and force; every such movement is a cause of joy as it leads to the pleasure of execution and the triumph of success. We begin to understand this and make some efforts to train the young in the deft handling of tools and the practice of handicrafts. Some day, perhaps, we shall see apprenticeship to trades revived, and good and beautiful work enforced. In so far, we are laying ourselves out to secure that each shall “live his life”; and that, not at his neighbour’s expense; because, so wonderful is the economy of the world that when a man really lives his life he benefits his neighbour as well as himself; we all thrive in the well-being of each.”   Charlotte Mason

My girls taught themselves how to crochet and then began teaching others. They’ve had crochet parties both planned and impromptu where they’ve taught friends to crochet and knit. They’ve even taught me! They’ve been talking for a while about taking their art and teaching bug even further, first setting up a blog and eventually selling their wares on-line. Just this week, they took that first step and set up Loops Of Art, their blog where they share their projects, offer tips and tutorials, and (one day soon) will sell their work.

Words can’t express my admiration and pride in them. First, they are truly self taught. One of the reasons I’m completely convinced of the saying, “All education is self-education” is because I’ve seen the reality of that in my children. This is their desire and project, not mine or anyone else. While they’ve sought out advice and guidance, the motivation and passion is all them. I’m also impressed with the thought they’ve put into this, and the wisdom they’ve shown in making their plans and balancing this project with all their other responsibilities and ventures.

It’s times like these I’m pretty sure I’m not completely messing up at this homeschool mom thing.  Go check out their blog and be amazed. I know I am.
