Don’t worry precious, the earnestness wears off

Do you remember when you were young and oh-so-earnest? Whether you were an idealist or a cynic, you did it with all your might.

Ah, to be young enough to get away with this level of stupidity:

My understanding of reproduction is that it is the basis of the institutions of marriage and family, and those two provide the moorings to the structure of gender and sexual oppression. Family is the social institution that ensures unpaid reproductive and domestic labour, and is concerned with initiating a new generation into the gendered (as I analyzed here) and classed social set-up. Not only that, families prevent money the flow of money from the rich to the poor: wealth accumulates in a few hands to be squandered on and bequeathed to the next generation, and that makes families as economic units selfishly pursue their own interests and become especially prone to consumerism.

So it makes sense to say that if the world has to change, reproduction has to go.

Which I guess is the progressive version of “We had to destroy the village to save it.” (Warning, clicking the interior links leads down a rabbit hole of vapidity.)

Really, this isn’t a post on the linked article. Some things speak for themselves and there is just too much to fisk. Also, the manic laughter is frightening the children–little oppressors. It just brought back memories of the idealism of youth. Apparently the young lady (that’s gotta chafe) is 21. Ah, twenty-one: staying up all night at diners arguing intensely over who knows what, or not arguing and being oh-so-cool in our cynicism about all those idealist, or machiavelli in our strategies to take over the world, or “analyzing.” Twenty-one is never wrong, always serious, always earnest.

Then you grow up and either temper your ideals or *gasp* change your mind. Not that everyone over 25 is without principles, but perspective comes with age. And also, a healthy respect for those who come before you. At 20, everyone but your personal idols are clueless. Then your idols become fallible and everybody else gets smarter.
